The emphasis in an artist’s work is to create new things or to transform the common objects of our trivial existence into something more meaningful and lasting. Each work of art alludes to the past but aims at the future; it is a living chain that ties modern art with that of the primitive people. But the images we use to express ourselves today are mainly symbolic; we do not relate to them in the same way, and they do not influence our lives as profoundly as that of the primitive man. It is very difficult for us in our actual civilization to attain fully their simplicity and sincerity, but what I am striving to portray in my abstract works is our inner and outer world recalling the simple ways of expression of those who were closer to the beginning of humanity. Being conscious of the great variety of stimulus that the innumerable elements and images in our urban and rural environments offer to our visual and tactile senses, I intend to portray today’s oneiric life in a ‘primitive’ way, attempting to represent our ‘dream’ world with the intensity and sincerity of nature’s children, with their vigorous colors and simplicity of form which I apply in a way most meaningful to my work and ideas.
Although the general meaning of the term ‘Abstract’ is that it is the opposite of the concrete, or ‘realism’, my abstract works have Nature as their starting point. Their departure from accurate representation is only partial. I do have a ‘real’ subject matter in mind: a figure, an object or a landscape which in the process of creating a new image is simplified or exaggerated or stylized altering for instance color and form accordingly to what I feel is the correct response to that particular image. I often use many layers of washes of very diluted paint – that is why I love using acrylics – to build up the different values of tones: Strong, dark, or light and vibrant, which allow me to push dark areas to the background and light ones to the front in various layers, somehow resembling the many curtains on a stage.
